Traumatic Brain Injury and Perinatal Mental Health

In Canada, 2% of the population lives with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and there are 18,000 hospitalizations for TBI every year. One-third of individuals with TBI are female, and females with TBI are more likely than males to experience mental health problems post-injury. However, little is known about their mental health around the time of pregnancy. We are using population-wide medical records data in Ontario to study the risk of mental illness in individuals with TBI before, during, and after pregnancy and associated risks of medical problems in the birthing individual and baby. Our data will inform the development of trauma-informed mental health care services that address the unique needs of individuals with TBI around the time of pregnancy.
